Interview with Eileen Phares

Where is your region?
All the schools in Cupertino along with Deputy Janet Shannon.

What does your family think of your job?
My childern haven't known me to do anything else, so they just accept this as something I do. My dad thinks it's great, since in my generation there weren't many female officers. My mom was scared for me when I was in patrol. But now, when I am not in a patrol car at all times, she feels more comfortable about it.

How do you feel about your job?
It's extremely challenging. The challenge is that when you come to work each day, you don't know what situtations will present itself. You have to rely on your skills to work the problem. Eeach situation can be different and each solution is different. We get calls from schools with criminal problems and every solution differers from the next. I guess I like the challenge. You never know when an emergency might arise and you have to think quickly.

How many hours do you work?
We work a 4-10 shift which equals 40 hours per week. The hours are flexible because we work in evenings sometimes.

Where is your region?
All the schools in Cupertino along wiht Deputy Janet Shannon.

What do you think about the "Cops" TV show?
I don't watch it very often because it is a lot like work. But it is realistic. However, it is too much like work for me to enjoy it.

What do you watch on TV?
I watch TV in spurts. Right now I watch Jag. I also like to watch Law and Order. I find the court proceedings pretty interesting.

Do cops prefer bagels or doughnuts?
Probably doughnuts still. In the old days, the only place that was open at 3 o'clock was the doughnuts shop. So that was the only place for them to go for a cup of coffee and doughnuts. My favorite doughnuts shop is Happy Doughnut. They also drink a lot of coffee.

How is your family?
I am a single mom, so I am busy raising my kids. I am also traning for a Triathalon. The State of San Jose is having a triathalon. They have a lot of events and it brings together police stations from all over the state. I also have two grandchildren. They are bout just a year old.

From your perspective is crime increasing or decreasing in this city?
Statistically, they say it is decreasing, but it seems that crimes are getting more violent. I feel like there are more violent crimes than when I was growing up and there are more juveniles in them. It just seems like violence is on the rise.

What kind of music do you like?
Soft rock and oldies. Really old oldies. Some examples are Statisfaction by Rolling Stones. I also have the Doobie Brothers too. They remind me of college.

Why are you doing the triathalon?
When I was growing up, if you were athletic, you were called a tom boy. Not many girls were therefore involved in sports. I think I am doing the Triathalon since the athlete in me has blossomed.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Southern California. We had a pool and I loved the beach. I did not do any body surfing but I gess I just like the water and being in the water.

Do you have siblings?
I have two brothers. And they live in Southern California. They have always been really supportive of my job. I visit them and they visit me. Even though we do not have much time, I feel that we are close to each other. They are proud of what I have done.

What do you do in your spare time?
I do needle work or embroidery. I used to take dancing lessons and painting lessons. I also enjoy camping and skiing.
